game in baltimore tonight. it's an eight-year deal that takes the refs through the 2019 season. some pension reforms that the owners wanted, nice pay increases for the refs, hitting $200,000 a season in 2019. remember, these are mostly part-timers; right? and to give the owners some flexibility in benching refs it deems underperforming. the league will have the option to start hiring its own officials. nfl commissioner roger goodell said the agreement supports long-term reforms that will make officiating better. the teams players fans want and deserve both consistency and quality officiating. one football great says after the blown calls by the replacement officials, the league had to cut a deal. >> they were doing all right until they put the replacement referees in. it was a debacle. it was an embarrassment. they had to cave because the game was being compromised. peter: the refs will vote on the agreement friday and saturday will be back on the fields for sunday's games. dagen and connell. connell: by the way everybody keeps saying the lockout -- it is temporarily lifted tonight;

"sports illustrated" managing editor. thanks so much for joining us. i love when roger goodell in the press conference, the nfl commissioner said it had nothing to do with monday night. they were so close to the deal anyway. it was right thing to do. what is your take on the deal? >> i think they would have played it out as long as they could have without completely egregious mistake of that. first three weeks of the season ref earlier eing was -- refereeing was pretty poor. they had to make a deal. melissa: if you look at the deal laid out seems like the refs really won, 173,000 next year and $205,000 i think it is two or three years from now. they didn't give a lot of concessions at all in the retirement package. still a part-time job. you think they won? >> i think they did. they got most of what they wanted. they got the nfl did get this bench of full-time referees they can go too if some referees are underperforming. what they really succeeded in what you saw was the

but the regular officiating crews return to work tonight for a game between the cleveland browns and baltimore ravens. more now with mike pesca of npr, who's been covering the story and joins me from new york. well, mike, this was obviously not your usual labor struggle. how much did the public outcry really force the issue in the end? >> well, we just heard goodell saying it didn't, but it had to have provided leverage. here's why i think it worked or why that touchdown/interception was a major factor. it provided a cost to the whole discussion. because throughout it, the "we blame roger goodell" or "football fans blame roger goodell" but it was the owners pushing roger goodell not to settle with the officials and they could aays clai "why do we have to settle with officials? they don't affect the bottom line? no one watches the game to watch a referee, they say, and maybe it's true when there's a lockout or labor strike with a factory you can always do the math and figure out how much it's costing you. so in this case the owners maybe didn't have a cost. but what that touchdown did, what all
